This week, Missouri State
Representative Sherman Parker,
sponsored two pieces of
legislation
story) that gives local
police the power to confiscate
weapons from domestic violence
incidents. Rep. Parker's
legislation also prohibits those
under a restraining order or
convicted of domestic violence
from owning firearms. Rep.
Parker was motivated to sponsor
this bill by a constituent who
wrote to him about her own
personal tragedy involving
domestic violence. According to
FBI estimates, a woman is a
victim of domestic violence
every 15 seconds in this
country. "The State of
Missouri must get in compliance
with the Federal Violence
Against Women Act, says
Parker. "I feel strongly that
these measures will do a great
deal to protect those who are
potential victims of domestic
violence." Representative
Parker is a strong supporter of
the 2nd amendment and has
received an "A" rating from the
National Rifle Association.
"We have the ability to honor
gun owner’s rights and punish
those who use firearms to
batter, intimidate, or murder
their loved ones."
Representative Parker has
previously sponsored this
legislation in 2003 and 2004.
