Sherman Parker- a life long
Republican whose father worked
on several successful campaigns
for former Massachusetts
Senator Edward Brooke-
is seeking this election cycle
to
broaden the GOP's appeal
as he campaigns for a seat in
the next Congress. "The
Republican Party has done a
terrible job at reaching out to
African- Americans," said
Parker, a state representative
from St. Charles County and the
only elected black Republican in
state government. "Black
folks distrust Republicans
partially because they don't
have a presence in the black
community. Democrats campaign to
black people. People are more
likely to vote for the person
who asks for their vote than
someone who might have a good
idea but never explains it."
He believes the GOP is still the
party of opportunity but he also
worries that it's becoming too
rigid. "Some people say that
if you don't follow the party
line on every issue, you're not
"Republican enough". How ironic
is that when some people say
blacks who consider the
Republican Party aren't "black
enough." The 21st century
leadership I will bring to
Congress requires attentiveness
and respect for all viewpoints
without necessarily agreeing
with them" Representative
Parker is pleased that his
message of conservative ideas
that focus on creating
opportunity, demanding
responsibility, and fostering an
environment for growth and
prosperity for all Americans, is
receiving positive responses
from the voters.
Sherman Thompson Parker is a
Republican in his second term
representing parts of St.
Charles County in the Missouri
